- .We will expand triad and 7ths chord shapes up the fretboard using the CAGED system.
Learning your Chords along the Fretboard
- We will expand on triad and 7th shapes with their roots based on the 4th, 5th and 6th strings, so you can have a vast option of ways to play diatonic chords.
- Continue to expand on these shapes and visualize the chord tones of these shapes, so we can visually make the connection between : triads, spread triads, 6ths, 7ths, diminished, half diminished
Chord Substitutes for a Sweeter Sound
- Discuss inversions and learn how maximize triad voicings so you can utilize soulful chord melody especially when playing in a band.
- Explore 'Fat chords' -Upper extensions such as 9ths, 11ths, 13ths and altered chords to add more color to your progressions.
Enhancing Any Chord Progression
- : We will explore reharmonization techniques - diatonic substitution, secondary dominants and tritone substitution and how we can use them to enhance chord progressions.
- We will continue with more reharmonization - borrowed chords, common tone reharmonization and leading tone diminished 7ths, to add more complexity to what we play.
Next Level Chord Voicings
- Introduce 'secret' voicings' which will set you apart from the average player . These are 'Drop Voicings' which are rarely spoken about and understood among guitarists. We will look at how we can take advantage of them to play unique 4 part harmony on the guitar.
- Look at practice exercises to get more familiar drop voicings along various string groupings on the guitar, so you can start using them in your progressions.
Soulful Progressions
- We will breakdown a couple standard progressions used in Soul music ( Gospel, RnB etc) and various ways to play them along the fretboard.
